BARBARA M. FOSSUM, PhD, FSME President Society of Manufacturing Engineers
Barbara M. Fossum, PhD, FSME, is an independent consultant and coach in the areas of strategic planning, process engineering, technology assessment, new venture validation and business planning for entrepreneurial startups. Fossum also is a Senior Research Fellow of the IC2 Institute of the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin), where she works in worldwide economic development projects involving technology commercialization.
Previously Fossum was president of the Gordon Group, a Chicago-based organizational and leadership development company and president and a principal owner of Reveille Technology, Inc., a manufacturing execution system software company. With Reveille, Fossum worked to improve and automate the flow of work through factories. Fossum also was a senior data processing consultant at Unisys, and a member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories. Fossum held various positions at the University of Texas at Austin, primarily starting and operating programs which support small to medium-sized manufacturing companies and high-technology manufacturing startups. As associate director of the Manufacturing Systems Center, she worked with various government organizations and private industry to plan for manufacturing support facilities throughout Texas.
A member since 1989, Fossum is currently the SME President and serves on the Executive Committee; Executive Compensation Committee; and the Finance Committee, a member of the Florida Suncoast Chapter 159, and an SME Fellow. Fossum served previously on the SME Executive Committee and Board of Directors, and on the board of advisors of CASA/SME, was chair of CASA/SME, and an editor of CASA's Blue Book series. She also was a member of SME's ad hoc Lifelong Learning Committee. Fossum was educated at the University of Texas at Austin, Stevens Institute of Technology and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. She holds a PhD in Operations Management, and an MBA and MS in Mathematics/Computer Science.
